Five siblings died from smoke inhalation during a house fire in the Selçuk district of Turkey’s western İzmir province late on Nov. 11.
Accordingly, the mother Melisa Akcan reportedly left her children, aged between one and five, at home to collect scrap as a living, İhlas Agency reported.
A fire broke out when the electric heating stove overturned in the house.
While the neighbors called authorities, the house was filled with smoke quickly.
While five children are considered to have lost their lives due to smoke inhalation, an investigation has been initiated.
A detention warrant was issued for the 27-year-old mother.
The father is currently in prison, Anadolu Agency reported.
Meanwhile, the Family and Social Services Ministry stated that the family has received 110,000 liras ($3199) in social assistance since August, and that the officials visited their house 18 times this year.
The family did not accept the offer to place the children under state protection, the ministry added.
