60 percent of Turkey's lakes dried up as a result of severe drought
Some 60 percent of Turkey's lakes have dried up as a result of severe drought, a recent report by the Water Policies Association revealed, the daily Milliyet reported on Aug. 26. Underground water reserves have also shrunk drastically, prompting suspicion of water-related migration in the near future.
Duvar English - Some 60 percent of lakes in Turkey have dried up as a result of severe drought, the Water Policies Association revealed, the daily Milliyet reported on Aug. 26.
Streams in Turkey that fall outside of the Ceyhan Delta have lost 20 to 70 percent of their discharge velocity, the report titled Lakes and Wetlands Action Plan said.
Farmers in Turkey were able to draw water as shallow as 20 meters underground, but now need to dig as far as 200 meters, the report said.
Such severe drought is likely to cause large migration patterns in the near future, Water Policies Association chair Dursun Yıldız said.
