25,000 ‘deliberate killing’ convictions given in 2021 in Turkey

According to Turkey's Justice Ministry statistics, the number of convictions over the "deliberate killing" charge reached 25,000 in 2021, with a 33% increase from the previous year.

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) lawmaker Murat Emir has expressed that Turkish courts made 24,987 convictions over the charge of “deliberate killing" in 2021.

Emir pointed out that 14,478 convictions were given for this crime in 2014, according to the Justice Ministry’s statistics.

Emir said that the government Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) weakness in preventing crime, and polarizing policy are reflected in data and stated “Turkey is on its way to becoming a crime country with the AKP," the daily BirGün reported.

18,766 convictions were given on the charge of “deliberate killing" in 2020. Compared to 2020 figures, the conviction decisions given in 2021 increased by 33 percent. 

Emir also noted that the number of acquittals given in 2021 over the charge of “deliberate killing” is about 6,000.
