AC units on ancient Istanbul palace removed following public outcry

A large piece of air conditioning equipment was removed from the chimney of an ancient palace in Istanbul following public outcry about its installment. The 16th century palace was commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificient.

The ventilation box for an air conditioner was removed from the chimney of ancient Mihrimah Sultan Palace in Istanbul's Üsküdar district after public outcry against it.

Daily Sözcü reported on Aug. 10 that a large piece of air conditioning equipment was hung on the side of the ancient structure's chimney.

The daily had also noted that the complex' courtyard had been closed off with a plastic roof.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya tweeted late on Aug. 10 that the air conditioning equipment had been removed.

"We will continue working together to carry on Istanbul's cultural and historical relics to future generations," Yerlikaya said.
