Ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Ordu deputy Şenel Yediyıldız, known for dubbing President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan a prophet, said that casting a vote in the 2023 general elections will be even more important than Muslim worship practices, the daily Cumhuriyet reported on Sept. 23.

Speaking in the context of a Muslim afterlife where one has to repent for their good deeds and shortcomings, Yediyıldız said that he himself will "pay" for his vote after death.

"Don't think I won't pay for the votes I cast. Sincerely, I'm telling you that you will pay for it even more than the prayer times you missed, the fasting you couldn't perform or the pilgrimage you skipped," Yediyıldız said.

In a wedding ceremony he took part in, Şenyıldız had referred to the president in a term used only for the Prophet Mohammad and had prompted controversy nationwide.

"AKP Ordu deputy Şener Yediyıldız deemed the president a prophet!" wrote main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Deputy Alpay Antmen on his social media after Yediyıldız's statement.

Yediyıldız had to apologize for his words after the main opposition deputy's comments.
