Alert issued over strong winds of up to 85 kph for Istanbul

Istanbul will be hit by a new wave of cold and rainy weather starting on Feb. 7 evening. Winds of up to 85 km per hour will accompany the heavy precipitation.

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) has announced that a new wave of cold weather from the Balkans will decrease the temperatures and cause winds of up to 85 km per hour in Istanbul starting on Feb. 7.

“Istanbul will go under the influence of cold and rainy weather coming from the Balkans as of 6 p.m. this evening. The speed of the storm will go up to 85 km per hour and will continue until Wednesday,” İBB spokesperson Murat Ongun tweeted on Feb. 7.

Turkish State Meteorological Service also issued a similar warning saying that the country's Marmara region will be under the influence of southwest winds of up to 80 km per hour starting on Feb. 7 afternoon.

It warned the citizens against the potential collapse of trees and poles as well as poisoning from carbon monoxide in places heated by coal stoves.
