Anatolian rock band Altın Gün nominated for Grammy
The Anatolian rock bank Altın Gün, led by Jasper Verhulst and lead singer Merve Daşdemir, has been nominated for the "best world music album" in the upcoming Grammy awards.
Nominees for the Grammys, the prestigious musical awards, were announced. Altın Gün, often described as the band that introduced "Anatolian rock" - a particular fusion of Turkish folk and psychedelic rock that emerged in Turkey in the 1960s - to the world, are among the nominees for the "best world music" category with their album Gece.
The band has been nominated at the awards ceremony which will be held for the 62th time in Los Angeles on January 26 2020. Though reviving a uniquely Turkish genre, Altın Gün is led and was founded by Dutch psychedelic rock musician Jasper Verhulst. Its lead singer is Merve Daşdemir, while other members of the band are Erdinç Ecevit Yıldız, Gino Groenveld, Ben Rider and Daniel Smienk and hail from the Netherlands, Turkey and the UK.
Published in 2017, their first single included the songs "Goca Dünya" and "Kırşehir'in Gülleri". Their first album 'On' was published in March 2018.
Altın Gün adapts cult songs in their idiosyncratic style, promoting Turkish music to the world.
American singers Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey stand out as Grammy nominees for the "Album of the Year" category. Lizzio and Billie Eilish are the only two artists to have been nominated in all four of the most important categories: best new artist, best song, best recording and best album.
