It seems that alcohol will continue to be among the main problems of the Republic in its second century. Alcohol consumers need to be as brave and persistent as the political Islamists who do not hesitate to insult drinkers and take their money through taxation in the second century of a secular Republic.
Rakı finally has its sensory wheel
Aromatic ingredients of many types of drinks are classified from a sensory point of view. As a result of these studies, graphics called sensory identification wheels (circle, spectrum) are created. Such wheels have been developed for many drinks such as whisky, wine, beer, cognac and coffee. Thanks to a recent study, Turkey’s national drink rakı has finally had its sensory wheel.
Ban on alcohol sales during COVID-19 lockdowns in Turkey
I am now a writer in a country where alcohol sales have been fully banned on the weekends due to the pandemic, or rather, the pandemic has been used as an excuse to ban alcohol sales. It may seem that alcohol would be one of the last knots the AKP government would try and untangle, but perhaps it is a Gordian knot. If this knot is so easily cut by pandemic excuses, rather than a sword like Alexander the Great, then we will soon be nostalgic for the role of alcohol in Turkish culture.
