British Embassy in Turkey hosted a panel discussion on media in the digital age titled "Media in the Digital Age: Challenges and Opportunities" in the capital Ankara on Jan. 15.

The panel that was supported by the Chevening Alumni Programme Fund (CAPF) was hosted by British Ambassador Dominick Chilcott at the British Embassy Residence.

Duvar English's Editor-in-Chief Cansu Çamlıbel, Medyascope's Editor-in-Chief Ruşen Çakır, Dokuz8's Editor-in-Chief Gökhan Biçici, Will Church from Thomson Reuters Foundation and Eylem Yanardağoğlu from Kadir Has University participated in the event as panelists.

"In Turkey, the UK government, through this embassy, has funded studies to monitor media freedom in Turkey. We have supported Turkish civil society organisations that work to encourage citizen journalism and counter disinformation," Chilcott said in his opening remarks.

"Now the news cycle is 24 hours a day. Social media has dramatically changed the way we access news & information and has facilitated the rise of citizen journalism. The UK government, together with the Canadian government, hosted a conference last July in London. The aim of the conference was to find ways for governments and organisations around the world to enhance media freedom and the protection of journalists," he also said.

During the event, the panelists shared their knowledge and experience of the transformation of media from traditional print and broadcast news to online and digital media platforms and the challenges and opportunities this transformation presents.
