British author, traveler and marathon runner Rosie Swale Pope is running from England to Nepal to draw attention to Phase Worldwide, a charity that supports health, education and livelihoods in remote parts of Nepal.
After departing from Brighton in July of 2018, 73-year old Pope arrived in Turkey after passing through Germany, Austria and the Balkans. Pope plans to make it all the way to Kathmandu, Nepal by 2021, after traveling nearly 6,900 kilometers on foot.
Speaking to journalists at the Pazarkule border gate in Edirne province, Pope said that she was greeted by friendly people at the border who offered her tea.
"I will spend a few months in Turkey. When I get to Istanbul, I will fly back to England to see my family for a week. I sometimes take a break and go back to England to speak at conferences or work on my book, which is how I support my travels. I have never been to Turkey. It's wonderful. "
Pope carries a mini caravan with her which she uses for sleeping and carrying personal belongings. "This caravan is great. I sometimes stay at hotels but usually sleep in this on the road. It's also great for running at night.
"After Turkey, I will go through Georgia, Azerbaijan then around the Caspian Sea and then into Nepal." she said.
