Caretakers of Gli the Hagia Sophia cat have warned visitors of the museum-turned-mosque on his old age after overwhelming attention.

"Thanks a lot for all your attention, but as you know I'm 16 years old. That means almost 81 human years. I'm not as strong as I once was," read the caption of a picture shared on the cat's Instagram account.

"If you really love me, don't use flash and don't come too close when taking my pictures. Don't feed me, I need special foods to stay healthy. If you brought food for me, give it to my friends outside. Please wear a mask," it added.

Hagia Sophia was opened for worship on July 24 after it was declared a mosque by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan earlier this month.

Worshippers were seen taking pictures of Gli with flashes and feeding him unhealthy food.

Islamists on Twitter also started to search for a new name for him, saying that it should be more Islamic rather than Gli.
