Chemical blast kills one person at TÜBİTAK in capital Ankara

One person was killed in a blast thought to be caused by waste chemicals at TÜBİTAK Defense Industries Research and Development Institute (SAGE) in the capital Ankara.

A chemical blast on Sept. 25 killed one person at the Defense Industries Research and Development Institute (SAGE) of the Scientific and Technological Research Council (TÜBİTAK) in the capital Ankara, Demirören News Agency reported.  

Accordingly, an explosion occurred at the facility located in Gökçeyurt neighborhood of Ankara's Mamak district at around 4.40 p.m. local time. After the explosion, a fire broke out in the facility. While the fire was extinguished by TÜBİTAK personnel, one person died as a result of the explosion.

In a statement, Ankara Governor’s Office said they initiated “necessary judicial and administrative investigation.”

TÜBİTAK said “According to the initial findings, a chemical reaction occurred in the chemical waste area in the section where wastes are temporarily stored. One of our colleagues in the relevant infrastructure lost their life in the fire. May God have mercy on our employee, we express our condolences to their family and all their colleagues.”
