Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has said that the resignation of Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak in a statement on Instagram was unprecedented and amounted to a "state crisis."

"Such a resignation is a first in our history. This is a state crisis," Kılıçdaroğlu said on Nov. 9.

Albayrak's resignation, citing health reasons, came a day after President Tayyip Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, his father in-law, appointed former finance minister Naci Ağbal to replace former Central Bank chief Murat Uysal. No reason was given for the move, but officials said the lira's slump was to blame.

Political circles have been pointing to the disagreements between Albayrak and Ağbal and that the appointment was slammed by the minister.

Speaking at a news conference in the capital Ankara, Kılıçdaroğlu said that Erdoğan was running the country like a "family company." He also criticized the surprise removal of the Central Bank head, adding that the bank had lost its independence.

Kılıçdaroğlu noted that it was shameful that no major Turkish media outlet had reported the resignation in nearly 24 hours.
