Controversial Diyanet head re-assigned to his post for another 5 years

One of the most controversial figures in Turkish politics, Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) head Ali Erbaş was re-assigned to his post as the top religious official in the country for another five years, the Official Gazette reported on Sep. 17. Erbaş has come under fire in recent years over his homophobic remarks, as well as his increased involvement in state affairs.

One of the most controversial figures in Turkish politics, Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) head Ali Erbaş was re-appointed to his post for another five years by a presidential decree, the Official Gazette said on Sep. 17.

Known for his controversial statements about gender roles, Turkish society and other non-religious matters, the top religious official said "Bismillah once again with more love and excitement" in a tweet thanking President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his assignment. 

"I thank President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for re-assigning us to the holy post of Diyanet head, which the Constitution deems responsible for 'enlightening society about religion,'" Erbaş said. 

Some of Erbaş's controversial remarks have included homophobic statements, encouragement to dismiss all ideologies besides Islam and an increased involvement with government affairs. 

Most recently, Erbaş was at the forefront of the opening ceremony for a new service building of the Court of Cassation where he led a prayer to bless the structure.
