Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun has told the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) that it "will learn our system of governance" in response to a deputy's criticism on Turkey's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.

CHP Group Deputy Chair Özgür Özel on March 26 said that Turkey can only withdraw from the international treaty against domestic violence with the approval of parliament and not with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's midnight decree.

In response, Altun said that a cabinet decision was needed to exit the treaty in the previous parliamentary system and now it's up to Erdoğan to decide since the country shifted to an executive presidential system.

"This poor man who is unaware of our system of governance that our parliament drafted and people approved with a referendum tries to give lessons on the law," Altun said in a tweet on March 26.

The presidential aide was referring to the constitutional referendum in 2017 that shifted the country's governance system to an executive presidency. The country shifted to the system officially on July 9, 2018, replacing a 95-year-old parliamentary system.

"You will learn our system of governance," Altun said, adding that Turkey's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention was completed.

"It's done. Our notice of annulment has reached the Council of Europe Secretariat," he said.

"Everything was carried out in line with the procedures. Know your country! Stop lying!" Altun said.
