President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has urged deputies of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to have at least three children, as he voiced his dissatisfaction with the lawmakers who have one child.
"You stick with having one child. I'm saying at least three. I don't want one child for the vitality of our country," daily Hürriyet cited Erdoğan as saying on Feb. 20.
He then reportedly turned to the lawmakers with a single child.
"Am I right?" he asked.
Erdoğan is strictly against birth control and calls on couples to have at least three children. He previously deemed birth control as a "betrayal" against the country and suggests having children to keep the population dynamic.
He also voices his request at wedding ceremonies by telling newlyweds to have at least three children and, if possible, more.
