Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu's vehicle was subjected to an attack by a group who reportedly wanted to protest urban transformation in the Eyüp district.
The group punched the mayor's vehicle, as well as his escort security vehicles, prompting police to intervene in the incident.
While pro-government media reported that a woman was injured as a result of an attack by İmamoğlu's guards, it was later revealed that the woman fell and injured herself while trying to make the mayor's escort vehicle stop.
"Ekrem İmamoğlu did this to me," the injured woman named Ayşe Topçu, who was revealed to be a member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), told Demirören News Agency, but footage showed her falling while trying to attack the vehicle.
The group claimed that the municipality has been trying to demolish a park, which was refuted by İmamoğlu.
"We care about green spaces here. We won't allow any green space to disappear. Some citizens may have concerns, but we will build gleaming parks," İmamoğlu said during the groundbreaking ceremony on May 25.
İmamoğlu, who dealt a major defeat to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's AKP in the 2019 local elections, is often targeted by the government over bogus claims.
