HDP co-chair: AKP feeding on war policies, peace needed to end 'tyranny'

Pro-Kurdish HDP co-chair Mithat Sancar has called on the opposition to work together on drafting a constitution which will ensure the peace in Turkey. "Peace is the way to end the tyrant rulership in this country. Because despot, tyrant and fascist rulerships feed on wars. They want to secure their position through wars,” Sancar said.

Pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Mithat Sancar has said that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) feeds on war policies and peace is the only way to the end the current “tyrant rulership.”

Sancar called on the opposition to unite against the AKP's war policies, saying: “If the opposition is sincere in changing this rulership, then it would object to these war policies, which are really what is keeping the rulership alive, and accept to walk together [with the HDP.]”

“When the rulership is attacking us and treating us as if we are terrorists, if some members of the opposition are becoming a tool to this or using the same discourse, it is not possible to say that those powers [opposition] are a democracy target,” Sancar said on Aug. 24 in the resort town of Bodrum, during a meeting with locals.

“Peace is not just the demand of Kurds, the HDP. Beyond this issue, it is the way to end the tyrant rulership in this country. Because despot, tyrant and fascist rulerships feed on wars. They want to secure their position through wars,” Sancar said.

“When we say peace versus war, of course what we want is the silencing of weapons. We want an end to the 40-year-long war and a solution to the 100-year-old Kurdish problem through a democratic way,” he said.

Sancar called on the opposition to work together with the HDP on drafting a “peace constitution” to ensure the peace in the country. “I repeat our call to the opposition: Let's work all together on a 'peace constitution' for this country,” he said.

Sancar also said that jailed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan “can play a very important role regarding the ensuring of peace provided that the isolation policy against him is ended.”

“This rulership wants to prevent people from moving forward for peace. And it is keeping those who can pave the way for peace under isolation,” Sancar said. “We can build peace all together. There is no need for prejudices, complexes regarding this. We have historical responsibilities.”
