İYİ Party denies consulting pro-Kurdish HDP in the past, as row continues

Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Mithat Sancar has denied former deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder's remarks on the right-wing İYİ (Good) Party having consulted them in the past.

"No one came to us for advice from the İYİ Party. Let's assume that someone did. I also couldn't find the person who gave advice to them from our party," Sancar told Habertürk columnist Muharrem Sarıkaya on May 15.

Last week, Önder said that the İYİ Party sent intermediaries to consult the HDP.

"İYİ Party, which sent intermediaries to consult us, can't make up a position for the HDP," Önder told Medyascope, referring to İYİ Party leader Meral Akşener's remarks on seeing the HDP as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

His remarks were slammed the İYİ Party, with its officials urging Önder to prove his claims.

Önder, in return, said that the intermediaries can reveal what happened themselves if they want to.

Another politician to comment on Önder's remarks was experienced politician Ahmet Türk, the sacked mayor of the southeastern province of Mardin, who said that he was surprised about the former deputy's remarks.

"I was surprised when I heard his remarks. There are things that need to be kept hidden in politics," Türk told Mesopotamia News Agency on May 14, adding that he doesn't find it appropriate for Önder to engage in a row with the İYİ Party.

"I didn't witness such an incident. Besides, I didn't find Önder's statements timely when the government seeks to create an artificial agenda. I ask my friends to make statements via considering all aspects. Sırrı Süreyya has made significant contributions to the HDP. But in these days, I didn't find triggering a debate that the government sees as a life saver in order to distract people from the economic crisis appropriate," he added.
