HDP says Albayrak's resignation can't absolve AKP, calls on Erdoğan to take blame for economy

HDP co-chair Mithat Sancar has said that not just former Finance Minister Berat Albayrak, but also President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as well as his cabinet ministers are all responsible for Turkey's deteriorating economy. “The resignation of just treasury and finance minister would not be sufficient. The president should resign with all his cabinet ministers. We expect of him to show the courage to take the blame,” Sancar said.

People's Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Mithat Sancar has said that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) cannot absolve itself of the responsibility to account for the deteriorating economy by simply having the finance minister resign. He called on President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to resign, along with all his cabinet ministers.

“This system is collapsing. As this system is collapsing, it is not possible for them to get away with just putting the responsibility on one person. The person who is really responsible for this sits at the top of the system,” Sancar said during his party's parliamentary group meeting on Nov. 10.

“Theresignation of just treasury and finance minister would not besufficient. The president should resign with all his cabinetministers. We expect of him to show the courage to take the blame,”Sancar said, once again insisting that Turkey should hold earlyelections.

Former Finance Minister Berat Albayrak, who is also Erdoğan's son-in-law, said in an Instagram post on Nov. 8 that he was stepping down because of health reasons and to spend more time with his family.

More than 24 hours after Albayrak’s surprise announcement, Erdoğan on Nov. 9 accepted his son-in-law's resignation.

“As a result of the evaluation by our president, Finance and Treasury Minister Berat Albayrak’s request to resign has been accepted,” the Presidency’s Communications Directorate said in a statement, adding that Erdoğan admired what it said were Albayrak’s successes in his two-year tenure as finance minister.

A couple of hours after this statement, Erdoğan appointed Lütfi Elvan, the chairman of Parliament’s planning and budget committee, as the country’s new finance and treasury minister.
