Acclaimed Kurdish musician Ciwan Haco called on a number of celebrities to speak out against Turkey's Operation Peace Spring in northeastern Syria, in a Twitter statement on Sunday.
“Today, my people, the Kurds are facing a genocide and ethnic cleansing in northern Syria by the Turkish state and its jihadi, al-Qaeda affiliated proxies,” said Haco, who was born near the Syrian Kurdish city of Qamishlo and currently lives in Sweden.
“We did not choose this war, but when ISIS spread throughout the region, my people spearheaded the fight that ultimately lead to the defeat of the so-called “caliphate”, sacrificing tens of thousands of lives in the process,” said Haco in his harshly-worded statement.
Haco performed in Turkey for the first time in 2003 in the city of Batman and then again in 2012 in a duet with the famous Turkish singer and actress Hülya Avşar.
Among the celebrities Haco addressed included Eric Clapton, Roger Waters, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Korn, Sting, Mick Jagger, Slash, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Dave Mustaine, Fayrouz, Santana Carlos, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rihanna, Robert De Niro, Bruno Mars, Pink, Katy Perry, Neil Young, Scorpions, Stevie Wonder, Nick Cave, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Marilyn Manson.
