Istanbul governor to COVID-19 patients: For God's sake, do not go out outside

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya has urged COVID-19 patients who are self-isolating at home not to leave their houses under any circumstance. Yerlikaya said that local governor's offices have been meeting the needs of these patients in every way possible. Those who do not comply with the quarantine rules are imposed an administrative fine and also face criminal charges, the governor said.

“Iask of you something, as the governor of this city. For God's sake,do not go outside...We are both taking an administrative action andalso filing a criminal complaint,” Yerlikaya said on Sept. 3 duringan opening ceremony.

Yerlikaya said that local governor's offices in 39 districts are working to meet the needs of COVID-19 patients under home quarantine so that these patients do not have to step outside.

“Our social support groups are supporting them in every way. Whatever they need, we take it to them, newspaper, water, bread etc. If their financial situation is not good, we are also helping them,” Yerlikaya said.

Yerlikaya'sstatement came a day after Health Minister Fahrettin Koca announcedthat Turkey is going through the second peak of the first wave of theCOVID-19.

Fatalitieshave jumped to their highest since mid-May, when lockdowns were inplace, and new cases have risen to mid-June levels, at almost1,600. Turkey mostly reopened the economy and liftedweekend and age-specific lockdowns in early June.

The Interior Ministry on Sept. 2 announced that street weddings and large celebrations have been banned in all provinces in Turkey. The ministry also said that wedding ceremonies have been limited to an hour, with a ban on dancing and serving of food.
