The Italian resistance song “Bella Ciao” was on May 20 broadcast from several mosque minarets in Turkey's western province of İzmir.

Turks were stunned by the recital as they shared videos of this unusual incident on Twitter.

Ekşisözlük, a website built by user contribution, even opened an entry for this incident under the name of “The broadcast of Bella Ciao in İzmir mosques on May 20, 2020.”

İzmir provincial religious directorate initially denied reports of such a broadcast by issuing a statement on its social media account. But it later removed this post and issued a second statement reading: “According to our initial analysis, unidentified people sabotaged our central adhan [call to prayer] system in an illegal way.”

The religious directorate also said that an investigation was launched into the incident.
