Kurdistan Region President Barzani to visit Turkish President Erdoğan in Ankara

Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan Region President Barzani on Oct. 16 will meet with Turkish President Erdoğan in the capital Ankara during an official visit as part of the steps taken towards to strengthen bilateral relations.

Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Nechirvan Barzani is coming to Ankara on Oct. 16 for an official visit.

In a written statement made by the KRG Presidency, it was stated that Barzani would also meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan within the scope of his official visit.

The statement announced that the meeting would focus on strengthening relations between Turkey, Iraq, and the KRG. 

In addition to bilateral ties, the leaders are expected discuss recent regional developments and accelerated conflicts.

In April, Erdoğan also visited the KRG during hist first official visit to Iraq after 12 years and met with top Kurdish officials including Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

Short after Erdoğan’s visit, Turkey and Iraq have signed a memorandum of understanding on military, security, and counter-terrorism cooperation. Following the Second Security Summit between the Turkish and Iraqi authorities in Baghdad, Iraq National Security Council has banned the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The PKK, which has been waging an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984, is designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
