A mafia leader who was released from prison on April 16 has penned a letter to Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, thanking them for the bill that paved the way for his release.

Alaattin Çakıcı, a notorious mafia leader who had been in jail for 16 years on multiple charges, praised Bahçeli, who is a close friend of his, for being the "last legendary Turkmen leader of the Turks in the world."

"I thank Mr. Devlet Bahçeli, the MHP leader and the last legendary Turkmen leader of the Turks in the world, and President Tayyip Erdoğan, the architect of this bill who doesn't make compromises for western imperialism for the future of our state in the past four years," Çakıcı said in his letter shared by his lawyer Zeynep Çiftçi.

He also called on the newly-released prisoners to act responsibly amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Çakıcı, whose ties to the deep state is well-known, was released as part of a bill that allows some 90,000 convicts and arrestees to be freed in a bid to ease overcrowding in jails in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

Journalists and political prisoners - mainly opponents of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) - won't be released since they were excluded from the bill.
