Main opposition CHP lawmaker attacked with gun at rally

Turkish main opposition CHP lawmaker Melih Meriç was attacked with a gun during a rally organized by his party in southeastern Gaziantep province.

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) lawmaker Melih Meriç on Aug. 4 was attacked by an armed assailant while addressing the problems of pistachio farmers at a rally in southeastern Gaziantep province’s Nizip district.

Although panic erupted after the attacker fired their gun, no injuries occurred after the intervention of the MP’s bodyguards.

After the attack, the deputy stated on X, "Despite the (ruling Justice and Development Party) AKP's colossus attitude and its affiliated provocateurs, we will continue to stand by our pistachio producers. We will never allow the deliberate destruction of agriculture in our beautiful country, which has become a center for privatization and migration."
