Majority of Turks expect living standards to further deteriorate

Some 63 percent of Turkish citizens believe that their living standards will further worsen within the next year amid the melting of their wages against inflation, according to a recent survey. On the other hand, 73 percent of survey participants said that they will struggle with paying their gas and electricity bills in the upcoming six months.

A survey conducted by the research company Ipsos has revealed that 63 percent of Turkish citizens believe their living standards will further worsen within the next year. The survey was conducted in 28 countries, daily Sözcü reported.

Some 58 percent of Turks who participated in the survey said that they believe their disposable income after subtracting the compulsory expenses will decrease in the upcoming year. This figure stands at 40 percent globally.

Some 80 percent of participants in Turkey said that they “will not be able to purchase next year what they purchased last year.” Some 73 percent of Turks believe that they will struggle with paying their gas and electricity bills in the upcoming six months.

Some 87 percent of Turkish citizens expect their energy bills to further increase in the upcoming six months, according to the survey.

The government-run Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has reported an annual inflation rate of 79.60 percent in July, the highest since 1998, whereas the independent inflation group ENAG put the figure at 176.04 percent.

Turks have been left desperate and without hope by the recent economic crisis, as their wages are melting further every day.
