One more student arrested over Boğaziçi University protests

A Turkish court on Feb. 10 jailed one more student for taking part in the Boğaziçi University protests, which began last month over President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s appointment of a rector to the university. With the arrest of Koral Hacıbeyoğlu, the number of university students who have been jailed so far over the protests rose to 11.

One more university student has been jailed in connection with Boğaziçi University protests, bringing the total number of arrested in the protests to 11.

Istanbul Bilgi University student Hasan Koral Hacıbeyoğlu was arrested on Feb. 10, Mezopotamya news agency reported.

Hacıbeyoğlu was initially kept under police custody for six days and then released. However, he was detained upon a new decision, eventually leading to a formal arrest by a court on Feb. 10.

For over a month now, students, faculty members and alumni of Boğaziçi University have been protesting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's appointment of rector Melih Bulu, demanding an election to choose a rector from the university’s own faculty.

Bulu is a former political candidate from Erdoğan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Erdoğan has accused protesting students of being "terrorists," while Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu referred to them as "LGBT deviants."
