Prison authorities block Kurdish politician from receiving fish patterned dress for 'being risky'

Authorities of the Kandıra Prison in Turkey's northwest have blocked Kurdish politician Gültan Kışanak from receiving a fish patterned dress as a gift due to finding it "risky." "I wanted to give the dress to my mother during a prison visit last Monday. However, I couldn't because it was found risky. They said it's banned to give clothes that have patterns and symbols to inmates," Kışanak's daughter said.

Authorities of the Kandıra Prison in Turkey's northwest have blocked Kurdish politician Gültan Kışanak from receiving a fish patterned dress as a gift due to finding it "risky."

Kışanak's daughter Evin Jiyan Kışanak has said that the authorities said that the fish patterns on the dress, which were sent to the politician from a group of women in the resort town of Bodrum, pose risk.

"I wanted to give the dress to my mother during a prison visit last Monday. However, I couldn't because it was found risky. They said it's banned to give clothes that have patterns and symbols to inmates," Kışanak wrote in a piece in bianet on Nov. 4.

"I'm having difficulties in understanding why," she said.

According to prison authorities, the aim is to "prevent political propaganda."

"How can fish be made a tool of propaganda?" she asked.

"Is it because fish are free to swim in the endless sea and that is a subliminal message of a free and equal world? It may be," she added.

Gültan Kışanak has been in jail for months and is accused of having links to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) - an accusation that pro-Kurdish parties have been facing for years.,
