Schools, universities closed in Istanbul until next week due to expected heavy snowfall

Ahead of a new wave of cold weather to hit Istanbul, Governor Ali Yerlikaya has announced a series of measures including the closure of schools and universities until March 14.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya on March 9 announced a series of measures as a new wave of cold weather and snowfall is expected to hit the megacity. 

Accordingly, schools and universities will be closed until March 14 in Istanbul, which is home to about 16 million people.

“Starting tomorrow (March 10), educational activities in all educational institutions are suspended until Monday, March 14, including all public and private primary and secondary education institutions. Higher education at universities in Istanbul is also suspended until Monday,” Yerlikaya said. 

Yerlikaya also said that civil servants, workers and other personnel would be on administrative leave on March 10, provided that there is a minimum level of personnel for the execution of compulsory services, except for security, health and transportation services.

The Turkish State Meteorological Service announced that heavy snowfall will hit Istanbul starting on March 10. The cold weather is expected to continue until the beginning of next week.​
