Security footage shows Thodex CEO fleeing Turkey after $2b heist

New security footage from Istanbul Airport showed the CEO of Turkish cryptocurrency exchange Thodex, Faruk Fatih Özer, fleeing Turkey after defrauding users of $2 billion.

New security footage from Istanbul Airport showed Faruk Fatih Özer, CEO of Turkish cryptocurrency exchange Thodex, fleeing the country after carrying out a $2 billion heist, the largest in recent Turkish history. 

News broadcaster Habertürk reported that Özer left Turkey via Istanbul Airport at around 6 p.m. on April 20, and the Thodex founder consecutively deactivated his Instagram and Twitter accounts. 

Police raided the Thodex headquarters and launched an official investigation into the company on charges of forming a criminal organization and aggravated fraud.

Özer is accused of having robbed around 391,000 users of the exchange. 

The Thodex founder had previously confirmed his departure from Turkey and said that he had left to conduct meetings for the sale of the company.
