Senior citizens over 65 and citizens under 20 will be banned from using Istanbul's city-wide transportation card starting on Jan. 15 in an attempt to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the city.

The public transportation ban follows a ruling by the provincial Health and Safety Board, Istanbulkart's social media account noted.

Although senior citizens and students can receive discount fares if they obtain an Istanbulkart with their identity, it's possible to pick up a card from a vending machine without identity, bringing into question the efficiency of the new measure.
