Turkey aided Afghanistan $1.1 billion in 16 years: Foreign Ministry

The Turkish government handed $1.1 billion to Afghanistan in aid between 2004 and 2020, the Turkish Ministry revealed, Anka News Agency reported on Aug. 18. Ankara reportedly plans to hand out another $75 million in foreign aid in 2021 and 2022.

Ankara handed over $1.1 billion to Afghanistan in aid between the years 2004 and 2020, the Turkish Foreign Ministry revealed, Anka News Agency reported on Aug. 18. 

"Developmental aid we've conducted in Afghanistan since 2004 that's totaled $1.1 billion as of 2020 is ranked among the largest foreign aid our country has allocated," a report by the Foreign Ministry said. 

The foreign aid budget for 2021 and 2022 is $75 million, the ministry noted, adding that the funds are targeted at "ensuring Afghanistan is able to ensure their independence, autocracy and national unity."

The government has only succeeded in 23 percent of their goals about Afghanistan in 2020, the report said, noting the increased violence in the country as the cause of the deviation. 

The pending aid funds should be allocated to health, education and growth, and that the projects should be suitable for Afghan management post-establishment.
