Turkey Rafting Championship kicks off on Great Zab

The second leg of Turkey's Rafting Championship took off in the southeastern province of Hakkari on Oct. 27. The four-day event brought together 400 athletes from across the country. Both male and female athletes will compete in categories for downstream rafting, slalom and RX, a unique sub-category of the sport.

The second leg of the Turkey Rafting Championship took off on Oct. 27 in the southeastern province of Hakkari.

Organized with contributions from Hakkari Municipality, the Hakkari Governor's Office and the Turkey Rafting Federation, the Youth and Sports Ministry event was kicked off by Minister Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoğlu.

Some 25 teams from 12 provinces brought together 400 athletes on the Great Zab, a stream that spans more than 250 miles into Iraq.

Both male and female athletes will compete in categories for downstream rafting, slalom and RX, a unique sub-category of the sport.

Rafting Federation Deputy Chair Fikret Yardımcı said that they were hoping to host international tournaments in the future.

The Hakkari event will continue until Oct. 30.
