Turkey records over 2,300 violations of right to life in 2022

A total of 2,397 citizens lost their lives due to human rights violations, and another 5,361 have been exposed to torture and bad treatment in Turkey in 2022, main opposition CHP MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu’s report showed.

A total of 2,397 people, including 108 children, had their right to life violated in Turkey in 2022, according to a report prepared by main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) lawmaker Sezgin Tanrıkulu. 

“2022 Human Rights Violations Report” showed that 76 of these citizens died in prisons, 327 in violence against women cases, and 1,843 in workplace accidents (including 64 children). 

The report also indicated that 68 refugees died in Turkey in 2022.

Violations are not limited to right to life; another 5,361 people have been tortured or exposed to ill-treatment within the same period.

Some 52 journalists were convicted, while another 94 were detained and 37 were arrested in 2022. 

The police intervened against 544 demonstrations over the same period, detaining 5,789 people. 128 demonstrations were banned. Lawsuits and investigations were filed against 270 people for exercising their right to assembly and demonstration.

Turkish courts blocked access to 2,283 news reports on the internet while 311 people were detained for expressing their opinion in 2022, according to the report.
