Turkey’s Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Ministry has approved a new zoning plan to relocate some neighborhoods in the industrial district of Dilovası in Kocaeli province.

Dilovası hosts several heavy industrial facilities. As the industrial facilities expanded in the district, pollution and cancer cases also spiked.

While the decision allows the change in the zoning plan for 26 hectares of land, initially, the Tavşancıl neighborhood will be relocated, which is intertwined with the industrial facilities.

According to a report in the decision, “Industrial growth will bring air pollution and traffic congestion.”

“With the plan, it is aimed to produce decisions to decentralize the industrial zones and intertwined unhealthy residential settlements in Dilovası district center and thus to improve the areas that pose a risk to human health and have sustainability problems,” it added.
