The number of people who have died from COVID-19 in Turkey has risen by 93 in the last 24 hours to 3,174, with 2,615 new cases of the virus, Health Ministry data showed on April 30.

The total number of cases rose to 120,204, the data showed, the highest total outside Western Europe or the United States.

A total of 48,886 people have so far recovered from the new coronavirus, which causes the respiratory disease COVID-19. The number of tests conducted in the past 24 hours stood at 42,004, raising the total number of tests since during the outbreak to just over 1 million.

"We have exceeded 1 million in the number of tests. The increase in the number of cases is at a predictable level. The decrease in the number of patients needing ventilatory support and intensive care as well as the increase in the number of recovering patients has been continuing. It has not been easy to come to this point. Let's persist with the measures," Health Minister Fahrettin Koca wrote on Twitter.

April 29, Koca said during a press conference that the outbreak has reached its peak in Turkey and the the rate of rise in cases has been seeing a downward trend.

Koca however also warned that a second wave of infections might arise if citizens do not abide by the measures and isolation rules.

On April 27, Turkey announced that a three-day lockdown would be imposed in 31 provinces as of May 1, and similar weekend restrictions would continue until after the Eid al-Fitr holiday in late May.

The upcoming fourth consecutive curfew comes on the heels of a four-day lockdown weekend, which included the national April 23 holiday last week.
