Turkey’s Interior Ministry fines over 35,000 persons for violating COVID-19 curfew

Turkey’s Interior Ministry fined more than 35,000 persons for the four-day curfew that aimed to slow the spread of coronavirus. The ministry however said that over 63 million people had adhered to the rules, although they didn’t specify how this number was obtained.

Turkey’s Interior Ministry took legal or administrative action towards some 35,422 persons who violated the four-day curfew that started April 23 and aimed to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the country’s largest 31 cities. 

“63,640,000 of our citizens showed high conformity with the curfew,” the Interior Ministry noted, although they didn’t specify how this data was obtain. 

The ministry also noted that some 162 settlements, housing a total of some 222, 921 people were still under lockdown, while the lockdown on some 177 settlements had been lifted.

Law enforcement will continue to enforce social distancing measures in bazaars, grocery stores and supermarkets, the Interior Ministry noted, adding that the curfews on citizens aged 65 and above or 20 and below would still be in place. 

Lastly, the Interior Ministry noted that the entrance and exits to Turkey’s 31 largest cities would continue.
