Turkey’s media watchdog made an income of 17 million liras from fines in 2021

Turkey's media watchdog RTÜK has made an income of 17 million liras from the fines it imposed in 2021, its latest annual report revealed.

Turkey's Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) imposed 1,661 separate penalties for media organizations within 2021, according to the council's latest annual report. While the total amount of fines it imposed amounted to 55.8 million liras, the council made an income of 17 million liras from these fines.

According to the report, a total of 236 lawsuits were filed against the council in 2021. Some 91 of these lawsuits were concluded in favor of the board and 11 of them were concluded against it. Some 134 cases have not been yet decided on. 

Between 2017-2021, a total of 1,566 lawsuits were filed against the watchdog. Of these, 853 were concluded in favor of RTÜK and 190 against it. The report stated that 233 of these lawsuits continue.

The report also said that RTÜK filed 129 separate criminal complaints against various media service providers, persons and social media accounts during the same period.
