Turkey's unemployment rate nears double digits

In June, Turkey witnessed a slight surge in the number of unemployed individuals to 3.3 million, resulting in an overall unemployment rate of 9.6%.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) on Aug. 10 reported that the unemployment rate was at 9.6 percent in June, up by 0.1 percentage points from May.

On a monthly basis, the count of individuals aged 15 or older who were unemployed increased by 2,000, reaching a total of 3.3 million.

The unemployment rate was at 7.8% for men and 13.2% for women.

According to the standard used by TÜİK, an unemployed person is defined as someone who is not currently employed, who has looked for a job in the last three months and who can be employed in a job within 15 days.

The employment rate, on the other hand, came in at 47.8%, down by 0.6 percentage points compared to the previous month. The employment rate was 65.2 percent for men and 30.8 percent for women.

In June 2022, the unemployment rate was recorded as 10.3% and the employment rate as 47.8%. 

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) report on the labor force and employment report for the last quarter of 2022, Turkey ranked last among the OECD countries with an employment rate of 53.7 percent.
