Turkish authorities imprison 12 Peace Day protestors

Turkish authorities have arrested 12 people who were detained after the World Peace Day rally in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul on Sept.1.

A Turkish court on Sept. 4 arrested 12 people who were detained during the Sept. 1 World Peace Day rally organized by Labor, Peace and Democracy Forces in Kadıköy district of Istanbul.

The police intervened the crowd after the end of the rally and detained 13 people. According to the statement made by Istanbul Security Directorate after detention procedures, 12 people were arrested.

"A group was intervened after they performed a traditional dance (halay) to a march while displaying an illegal banner, leading to the detention of 13 people — 9 men and 4 women. Out of those arrested, 12 individuals, whose procedures were completed at the police station, were taken into custody by the on-duty court and sent to prison," the directorate stated.

Labor, Peace and Democracy Forces as the organizer of the rally consists various leftist institutions including political parties, youth organizations, and labor unions.

In Turkey, Peace Day is observed on Sept. 1, despite the fact that the International Day of Peace is globally recognized on September 21. First day of September was chosen as it marks the beginning of the Second World War and particularly owned by the Kurdish community in Turkey.
