Turkey’s Trade Ministry on Aug. 4 announced that 2.2 tonnes of methamphetamine was seized in a truck coming from Iran at the Gürbulak Border Gate in eastern Ağrı province.

The operation was conducted by the Gürbulak Customs Enforcement Smuggling and Intelligence Directorate teams, under the coordination of the Customs Protection General Directorate's Narcotic Crimes Combat Department.

As a result of the inspections and controls carried out on the vehicle, the teams determined that the legal cargo in powder form was found to contain methamphetamine.

The teams broke a new record due to the amount seized. The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office initiated an investigation into the incident.

Istanbul ranked 10th and Adana province 16th among 106 centers in Europe in methamphetamine use, according to the 2022 report of the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).

The police survey also showed that meth became the second most-used drug in Turkey in 2022. The United Nations (UN) International Narcotics Control Board's (INCB) 2022 report also revealed that Turkey has became a transit point for many drugs to reach markets in the Middle East and Europe.
