A Turkish court on June 16 banned access to Germany-based online radio station "Özgürüz" ('We are Free' in English) and its website ozguruz20.org at the request of the Radio and Television Supreme Council, known in short as RTÜK.

The radio station and the website are headed by Can Dündar, former editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet newspaper who has been living in exile in Germany since 2016.

The court's move came after RTÜK filed an application arguing that the radio broadcast was “illegal.” Following an analysis, the court approved of the media watchdog's demand and blocked access to the website.

Dündar announced on Twitter that the radio will continue to broadcast on ozguruz21.org.

He told Euronews that this is not the first time that Turkish authorities blocked access to the website and “will not be the last.”

“The government which thinks it has besieged the media completely in Turkey, is now trying to prevent broadcasts from abroad,” Dündar said.
