Firefighters in the southern province of Muğla have used CPR on kittens to bring them back to life after a fire erupted in a container used by a supermarket.

After extinguishing the fire on April 13, firefighters Tolgahan Akman and Hasan Demirtaş noticed four newborn kittens and their mother in the container.

They, as well as a nearby shop owner Yılmaz Polat, used CPR on the kittens for half an hour, managing to bring two of them back to life. Their efforts were recorded by a cellphone.

"We managed to bring two of them back to life with CPR. We couldn't save the other two," Akman told state-run Anadolu Agency.

"Our duty is to ensure the security of all living beings," he added.

Demirtaş said that they did their best to save the kittens.

"When we saw that the kittens were back to life, we were so happy. There's nothing more beautiful than a living being holding on to life after nearly dying," Demirtaş said.

"We were deeply saddened by the kittens that died," he added.

Veterinary Cahit Gürsel Bellek thanked the firefighters for their efforts.

One of the kittens was adopted by supermarket worker Sibel Turan, who named it "Smoke," while the other one was returned to her mother.
