The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has prepared a video to mark the fourth anniversary of the thwarting of the July 15, 2016 failed coup attempt.

The video prepared in English was shared by Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun on Twitter on July 13.

In the video, a student in a Western university describes how Turkish people poured to the streets to stop the coup bid.

"The Turkish people made history on July 15, 2016 by successfully thwarting a coup attempt. Together, we defended our democracy, independence and freedom. Four years later, we remember and honor our fallen heroes and veterans," Altun said.

The botched coup is widely believed to have been masterminded by followers of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen - an ally-turned-foe of the government.
