Turkish Justice Ministry requests red notice on Kurdish singer Ferhat Tunç over 'insulting' former PM

A Turkish court has rejected a red notice request of the Justice Ministry on Kurdish folk singer Ferhat Tunç over allegedly “insulting” former Prime Minister Binalı Yıldırım from the ruling AKP.

The Turkish Justice Ministry has requested a red notice on prominent Kurdish folk singer Ferhat Tunç over the charges of “insulting” former Prime Minister Binalı Yıldırım, Tunç announced on Nov. 20 in a social media post.

The 11th hearing of the case filed against Ferhat Tunç for allegedly “insulting” the then Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, from the ruling AKP, was held at the Büyükçekmece 16th Criminal Court of First Instance. 

The court panel stated that the Justice Ministry requested a “red notice” to be issued for Tunç but that they did not accept the request.

The court adjourned the hearing to Dec. 20, 2023. 

“We requested to testify In Germany where I reside. Germany always rejected the Turkish judiciary's request for (judicial assistance), noting that the allegations against me are within the scope of freedom of thought and expression. In the Justice Ministry’s 'red notice' request, it was stated that 'I continue my activities abroad.’ My only activity is my music, which allows me to breathe in exile conditions,” Tunç said.
