A Turkish lawyer who has been looking into femicide cases was revealed to have battered his girlfriend, the T24 news portal reported on Aug. 10.

Umur Yıldırım is known as the lawyer of the case of 23-year-old Şule Çet, who was raped and killed by two men, Çağatay Aksu and Berk Akand, in May 2018.

While the murder was tried to be covered up as a suicide, the autopsy report later revealed that she was killed.

In addition to Çet's case, Yıldırım is known for dealing with other violence against women and femicide cases.

His former girlfriend P.S., however, revealed that she was beaten by Yıldırım before they broke up. Her friends have also confirmed the incident, T24 said.

P.S., an intern lawyer, told the police that they had been living together with Yıldırım for a year when she wanted to move out. Yıldırım was infuriated by her decision and battered her on July 28, P.S. said. Two witnesses confirmed the incident.

Yıldırım's abusive behavior once again revealed the severity of the violence against women cases in Turkey, with even men looking into femicide cases engaging in violent behavior.

The number of violence against women and femicide cases skyrocketed during the Justice and Development Party (AKP) rule, mostly due to minor sentences given to men.
