Turkish man arrested over posting photo with alcoholic beverage in mosque

Turkish police have detained a man who posted a photo on social media with an alcohol bottle in a mosque in Istanbul. In his post on Reddit, the man wrote “If (the police teams) can find out which mosque (I am in) among 3,200 mosques…” After giving his testimony, the court arrested the man over the charge of “inciting the people to hatred and enmity.”

Turkish authorities have arrested a man for posting a picture with an alcohol bottle in a mosque on Reddit over the charge of “inciting the people to hatred and enmity.”

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced the detention of the man on Sept. 15 and said “S.Y.Ö., who shared a photo on social media showing that he was drinking alcohol in the mosque and wrote, ‘If they can find which mosque (I am in) among 3,200 mosques…’ The person was caught by our police officers in Istanbul.”

“The heroic Turkish police found and caught this person, as they find and catch every criminal. I congratulate our police officers,” Yerlikaya added.

The person, who was taken to the hospital for a medical examination, was referred to the courthouse, Demirören News Agency reported.

After giving his testimony, a court arrested the man in question on Sept. 16 over the charge of “inciting the people to hatred and enmity.”.
