Turkish man killed while trying to help woman getting assaulted by two men

A man who was trying to help a woman getting assaulted by two men was killed in Turkey's Konya province. The assailants were arrested.

A man was killed while trying to help a woman getting assaulted by two men in the Central Anatolian province of Konya, Demirören News Agency reported on May 27. 

Orhan Çumralıgil was at his friend's house when he heard the screams of the woman, identified only as A.B., who was subjected to sexual abuse and violence by Fatih Özçiftçi and Yaşar Karadeniz.

Çumralıgil, together with his friend Dündar Kömürcü, went out to help the woman, but both were stabbed by the assailants as a result. 

Çumralıgil succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while Kömürcü's treatment was ongoing. 

The assailants were arrested for intentional murder and injury. 

Violence against women has turned into a plague in Turkey, with dozens of women getting killed by men each year.

Most recently, Family and Social Policies Minister Derya Yanık downplayed the spike in violence against women cases in Turkey, saying that the increase is at "tolerable levels."
