Milk observed the largest inflation among consumer goods in January, as some 22 food items observed price hikes and 18 saw discounts, Turkey's Agricultural Chambers Union (TZOB) reported on Feb. 1.

Cabbage prices quadrupled in January, while potato and lettuce prices tripled. Cauliflower prices dropped the most over the first month of the year, putting producers at a loss.

Spinach, apples and onions also observed price drops, while zucchini, feta cheese and eggplants became more expensive.

Turkey's farmers have observed increasingly less state aid in their operations under the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), with the country becoming an importer of several goods.

Agricultural producers must be supported by the state to ensure food safety during the pandemic, TZOB Chairman Şemşi Bayraktar noted.
